The concept for World Urban Parks grew out of a strategic review of the International Federation of Parks and Recreation Administration (Ifpra) by the International Urban Parks and Green Space Alliance (Parks for Life) in conjunction with other stakeholders. In 2015 the two organizations united under the new umbrella World Urban Parks (WUP). Ekoparken Association joined WUP in 2016 and was able to create a standing committee within the organization called Large Urban Parks Committee. Yearly an International Large Urban Parks Award is conferred on some parks.
